Accelerated Reader
In order to participate in the Accelerated Reader program, you must demonstrate a willingness to test on at least two books that you will read this semester.
Alternatives to AR testing of your reading exist! If you have not passed at least one AR test by midterm, for a book that you have read this semester, you may be required to choose an alternative to Accelerated Reader. Examples of alternatives, to be completed for each of two books:
Accelerated Reader (AR) Program
Here is how the program works:
You will have time to read at the beginning of some English class periods, and you should read at home.
Tests must be completed in the Library Learning Commons. Either the Teacher-Librarian or the Library Technician can put you on the test (which is password protected).
If you arrive in class having finished your novel the night before, your teacher may give you an AR pass to come do your test in the LLC during class time, or you may use the teacher-signed pass on your lunch or before/after school.
Upon completion of the test you will see your score on the screen - how many points the test result earned for you and your accumulation of AR test points to date.
You can test on any book that has an AR test - a spine label indicates this. You can also check the AR test database at www.ARbookfind.com to see if your novel has an associated test. An oral test with the Teacher-Librarian is an option for books that do not have a test in the AR database. The last date to complete a test on popular series or book titles is the second day back after the Christmas break; that is, unless your teacher specifically advocates for an exception.
You cannot test on novels studied in class - not for the purpose of point accumulation.

AR Points to Grade Conversion
Students earn 5% of their term mark by reading independently! The Accelerated Reader (AR) program offers a simple way to accomplish this requirement. Most books have a content test in the AR database; if a test is not available for the book you plan to read, an oral test is possible (check in advance).
Note: If students reach the required number of points, but not the required number of works, their mark will drop one whole level.
